“Controversial.”
“Military Doctor.”
Are you out of your mind?
He was the head of the apartheid government’s chemical and biological warfare programme, Project Coast. One of its aims was reducing Black population growth, so insidious he investigated a biological agent intended to selectively kill Black people.
Project Coast scientists testified that the programme provided the drugs and poisons developed for use in murders of anti-apartheid activists.
Frank Chikane, then Secretary-General of the South African Council of Churches, was poisoned through his clothing using a lethal poison. He suffered organ failure and nearly died twice. A Project Coast scientist testified that he had supplied the poison to security police operatives and instructed them how to apply it to clothing.
Clandestine SANDF units testified that SWAPO prisoners of war were given overdoses of muscle relaxants Basson provided before being thrown from helicopters into the sea. One Special Forces officer testified that Basson personally and regularly supplied him with these drugs, which he used on the majority of the more than 200 people he killed and disposed of at sea.
Controversial? Nay. Monstrous. War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity per the Rome Statute. The only reason he was not hauled before the ICC to answer for his crimes is because its rules did not exist during the commission of his crimes.
The only reason he isn’t behind bars in South Africa is because of a botched criminal prosecution in 1999. He faced 67 charges, including murder, conspiracy to murder, drug offences and fraud. The court did not adjudicate the substance of some of the most serious allegations, including those concerning the alleged killing of hundreds of SWAPO detainees in Namibia.
The State appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeal, which declined to hear the matter because the papers from the State were lodged late. The Constitutional Court found that the SCA had failed to give proper weight to the extreme gravity of the charges and held that the SCA should have accepted the State’s late filing and allowed the appeal. The Court reinstated six charges that had been quashed, expressly leaving questions of double jeopardy and unreasonable delay to a trial court if the State proceeded with the prosecution.
The NPA nevertheless declined to re-prosecute Basson. A court therefore never got to test those questions.
The programme was only wound down in 1993. 1993. One year before South Africa’s first democratic election. Three years after Nelson Mandela and others were released.
A man who headed apartheid South Africa’s secret chemical and biological warfare programme, involving the development of lethal agents and the investigation of their use against human beings?
He is a deeply disturbing figure in South Africa’s history.
He is a symbol of the machinery of apartheid at its most depraved.
That is why his moniker is “Dr Death.” He was the Apartheid regime’s Josef Mengele.
And that is the history that must never be sanitised or sugar-coated. Bfr.
This made me think about how Sudanese women and girls committed suicide en masse when the terrorist RSF entered their villages, because they knew that the fate they would meet is worse than death itself. Protecting women against sexual violence in warzones is suicide prevention.
One of my collegues who always speaks to me in IsiZulu once nje wangiqala ngesingisi ngiyazi ke ukuthi useqamba amanga. Uhlezi ephika uma ngimubamba 😭😭🤣🤣
The Reserve Bank used Microsoft Copilot to design “elements” of a coin dedicated to the women of 1956?! We went from the brilliance of Lady Skollie doing our R5 a few years ago to ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?!
I consider myself to be a decent human being, for the most part. And if you do a solid one for me, I will always return the kindness. When people think I am a fool because I am decent, nah, I will take it to hell about me. See you in jail.
A 14-year-old girl is accused of giving birth on the side of a road and leaving the infant to die in Monterey County.
Investigators named the deceased newborn “Baby Angelita."
Angelita's young mother is at-large and wanted on suspicion of murder. The murder suspect's father, Sergio Galvez Perez, is wanted on suspicion of incest and child sex crimes.
Investigators believe Perez is hiding out with his teen daughter.
Sheriff Nieto said, "Perez is the biological father of the 14-year-old murder suspect and the biological father of Baby Angelita.”
Nieto said, "I’m here to say to Sergio Galvez Perez: you need to turn yourself in."

NibeWashi, about working for these big companies, nizoba miserable just like me. I work four jobs for the pay of one person. I am beyond tired. I am overworked. I regret ever coming here with my whole heart.
3 YEARS. ZERO ARRESTS. AND HER OWN PEOPLE STAYED QUIET.
Zanele Precious Nkosi was executed in broad daylight on 29 March 2023 outside her office in Rustenburg. Shot multiple times in the head and body like a target. A mother. A daughter. Chairperson of the North West Black Lawyers Association.
She didn’t just practise law. She served her community. Among other projects, she initiated efforts to provide sanitary pads to schoolgirls in and around Rustenburg so they could stay in class with dignity.
Her killers are still free.
Rustenburg SAPS has done nothing. No arrests. No updates. Just cold silence while a family’s life remains destroyed.
But the real disgrace? Her own colleagues.
The Black Lawyers Association. The LSSA. The attorneys and firms who worked with her. They had the resources, the connections, the platforms and the influence to force SAPS to account. Instead, most of them chose silence. Comfortable silence. Career-safe silence.
Why?
People of Rustenburg, I’m asking you straight:
What is happening with this case?
Why is SAPS so quiet?
And why did those who should have fought the hardest abandon her?
This is not just police failure. This is betrayal by the very profession that should have protected her name.
EXPOSURE.
The family has waited long enough. The silence ends now.
