Family Calls Off Search for Krugersdorp Teen Missing in Mozambique
After 22 days of desperate searching, the family of 18‑year‑old Rikus Kylander from Krugersdorp, Gauteng, has made the difficult decision to pause the search for the teen who went missing while snorkelling on a matric trip in Mozambique.
Rikus, a former pupil at Hoërskool Noordheuwel, vanished beneath the waters near Ponta do Ouro on 18 December 2025 during a holiday with about a dozen friends celebrating the end of their school years. According to his sister, Clarise, the group entered the sea at around 1pm, but while the others surfaced, Rikus never reappeared.
Despite immediate alerts to local authorities and a large-scale search involving volunteers, lifeguards, and rescue teams, Rikus has not yet been located.
His sister, Clarise, said the family is heartbroken but felt that “everything that could be done has been done”. The statement thanked the public for their support, including prayers, messages, and assistance in helping sustain search efforts over the past three weeks.
Search efforts may resume in the future if new information emerges, but for now, the family has asked for privacy and space to cope with this uncertainty. Authorities continue to monitor the area and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
The disappearance has sparked concern and awareness about the safety of ocean activities, especially in areas like Mozambique’s Ponta do Ouro.

I get where you’re coming from, and I agree that modern lifestyle plays a huge role. Ultra-processed food, chronic stress, poor sleep, hustle culture, environmental toxins, all of that definitely worsens health issues for everyone, women included.
But I don’t think it’s fair to pin most of these problems solely on ideology. Many of these conditions existed long before modern feminism or birth control, they were just poorly understood, ignored, or normalized. Painful menstruation, anemia, hormonal disorders, pregnancy-related complications, these aren’t new problems created by the times.
What has changed is that women are now juggling more. Biological demands on one side, economic and social pressures on the other. You can’t pretend hormones, menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth don’t come with real physiological costs, no matter the era. Add modern stress and poor nutrition on top of that, and the problems get amplified.
So yes, lifestyle matters a lot. Food, rest, stress management, and medical choices all play a role. But biology isn’t innocent either, and neither is a society that expects women to operate like machines while still carrying biological realities men don’t deal with.
It’s not one thing. It’s a collision of biology, modern living, and unrealistic expectations all happening at once.
