Unfortunately, just as the Vice Minister and EU Delegation left Phanom Dong Rak district, we received the news that yet another two Thai soldiers had stepped on a landmine. I wish to offer our sympathy for the incident, and call for an increased efforts from the Cambodian side, to put an end to these situations.
I also would like to thank the EU delegatation for being here today on this mission for humanitarian cause. In any clash between countries, no innocent civilians should be affected. In any dispute among countries, the fight should focus only the military targets. Yet, Cambodia chose to attack indiscriminatingly.
In the past months, Thai government has undertaken relief measures for those who lost their love ones and their homes, as well as those who got injured or displaced. However we are here to find out if there's anything more that should be done to offer assistance.
Unfortunately, the indiscriminant rocket and artillery attacks were further compounded by the fact that our soldiers stepped on land mines.
ICRC once hoped that land mines would be eliminated from this world in 2025.
But here we are today finding out that old and new mines which have been recently laid have affected 6 Thai soldiers. Sadly, we would never have known that these mines were there if our brave soldiers didn't step on them.
Today we may have only 6 soldiers affected but what if in the future, after the army withdraw from the border areas and civilians return to their lands and live their lives.
What if one day, a child got injured by the landmine for simply just looking for some roots in the ground, or playing on these lands.
As the Foreign Minister said, it doesn't matter whether the mines are old from the 1980s or new. It doesn't matter whether any country will join Thailand for de-mining. We will not, we cannot wait. Thailand will proceed with the de-mining because it is the right thing to do to protect our innocent civilians.
So here we are, looking ahead for the de-mining process, and I hope the information the EU delegation receive today will shed some light into ways that we can work together on the humanitarian causes.
