@HLockeSTEM Thank you for posting this. I'm a year into my PI position and it feels the same. Running as fast as you can on your treadmill, but never being close enough to hit the slow down switch. Good luck! Hopefully both of us will be able to hit that switch soon!
Talking mentorship:
Students can be your mentor too
Be humble b/c you can't know everything
Sit down and figure out what we can teach each other mentorship can go both ways
Not everyone can be a mentor to some people. While we may not like assigned mentors it's a starting point
#ADSA2024 How do you deal with a difficult team?
- spend time outside of work
- don't be afraid to meet 1:1
- sometimes you have to grit your teeth & move them on
- sometimes they just need to go. Be unafraid to let them go
- find the motivation for them being difficult
#ADSA2024 Q: How can men support women in stem?
A: Treat students like family. Express your desire to be an ally. Ask & encourage them to take leadership positions.Check in with your people- not everyone will ask for what they need.Speak up for your people when they're not there
Dr. MaryAnne Drake talking about sparking curiosity and encouraging failure in your labs. Such an important part of science. We all fail, and often we fail a lot. So long as you pull a little nugget of learning from that failure, it's worth it.
"It's not me. Sometimes it is just proving (the student) the opportunity." Brilliant and inspirational talk by Dr. Laura Hernandez for this Women in Dairy section @UWMadison
