I’ve been in a funk lately, and I think I finally figured out why.

I’m tired of feeling helpless in my own life.

Before I got sick, I worked full time. I supported myself. I had a career. I could deal with the normal shit life threw at me because I had the ability to earn money and fix the problem.

Then my body decided it wasn’t going to cooperate anymore.

I became disabled, and for years now I’ve been fighting and waiting for a system to decide whether I’m disabled enough to qualify for disability. After all that waiting, my hearing is finally next week.

In the meantime, I’ve been living on Alan’s survivor benefits. For a very long time, that was enough. I wasn’t rich, but I was okay. I could pay my bills, take care of my house and live my life.

The last few years have changed that.

Food is ridiculously expensive. Gas is ridiculous. Everything costs more, and the house I own seems to constantly have something that needs to be repaired. Right now my AC is freezing up, and instead of calling someone to come fix it, I’m flipping ceiling fans around and hoping I can limp it along because there simply isn’t money for an HVAC repair.

That’s a hard thing to admit publicly.

Especially when I remember the version of me who would have just gone to work and made the money to handle it.

I think that’s the part people don’t understand about becoming disabled. It isn’t only what happens to your body. It’s losing independence you spent your entire adult life taking for granted. It’s knowing exactly what needs to be done and being physically incapable of earning your way out of the problem.

And my body keeps reminding me that I don’t get to just push through it anymore.

So yeah, I’ve been in a funk.

I’m grateful. I’m still laughing. I’m still finding ways to make shit work because that’s what I do. And I’m still trusting that God has me even when I can’t see what He’s doing.

But I’m also exhausted.

Next week, after years of waiting, I finally get my disability hearing.

I don’t need anyone to feel sorry for me. I think I just needed to finally admit that this season of my life is really fucking hard.

The Muslim religion is the fastest-growing religion per capita in the United States, especially among minority races.
Last month I attended a training. During the training session, three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim faiths each presented their beliefs.
I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. The Muslim gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video.
After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Muslim and asked:
'Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. If that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?'
There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, “Nonbelievers"
I responded, 'So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?'
The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.'
He sheepishly replied, 'Yes.'
I then stated, 'Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine the Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same to guarantee them a place in heaven!'
The Muslim was speechless.
I continued, 'I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me ask you a question:
