@soulboytony hi Tony that looks like cow or horse to me. Yes, the lettering on the heel, the R&W are the initials of the clay pipe maker. I think the left heel will be the name and the right is the surname. I'll have to check that. Then there is a database of clay pipe makers' initials.

It's common to find Willow pattern pottery on the Thames foreshore but this is the first time I've found part of a plate marked with a mess number. It's quite crudely painted on too. I'd love to know who ate their dinner off this plate 19th C naval officer? #mudlarking#mudlark
