Now look at the security vetting. It was an absolute scam. When asked to list his foreign contacts, Mandelson complained. An official literally emailed him to just list a "handful of names" to "reassure the vetting team," openly admitting the process was "quite artificial." They actively helped him fake his background check!

He was the victim, but treated like a criminal.

“I can’t breathe” he says, over and over again.

Instead of helping him the police arrest him on false charges of racism.

Harrowing.

It’s hard to escape the conclusion he was treated differently because he was white.

No one should stay quiet about this.

These are real people and real families. Henry Nowak was a young man with his whole life ahead of him, yet the Prime Minister has not even publicly acknowledged him.

A newly elected councillor reached out to me recently.

His council’s finances are a complete mess and he wanted some advice on where to start looking.

We discussed debt levels, deficits and spending priorities at length.

But one figure stood out above everything else.

70% of spending goes to just 2% of residents.

And suddenly a lot of things started making sense.

When 70% of your budget is being consumed by just 2% of residents, the maths simply doesn’t work.

True that the absence of any competition between train operators on most lines meant they acted as local monopolies. The same is true of water (but not electricity). The only actual competition occurs during the bidding process, which may or may not generate better terms for the consumer over the franchised period. That's still more chances to improve a poor service that an open ended state monopoly will offer.

The capital problem might be the bigger problem. Just look at the return of the hated PFI in the NHS, that's private money. The government is bust, railways make massive loses so where does investment come from?
