A bumblebee can land on a flower treated by glyphosate herbicide and survive, but the bee is forever changed, and not for the better.

Finnish researchers exposed bumblebees to a single field-realistic dose of glyphosate herbicide, the amount a bee might pick up foraging in a sprayed field for a day. The bees weren't hurt in any way you could see. They flew fine, looked fine, behaved normally. Then researchers tested whether they could learn to tell similar flower colors apart and remember it two days later.

The exposed bees forgot almost everything. They tested at chance level, as if the learning had never happened. Unexposed bees remembered the colors.

The strange part is how targeted the damage was. The same exposed bees could still tell scents apart and handle simpler tasks normally. Glyphosate didn't blind them or dull them across the board. It broke one specific skill: the fine color memory a forager uses to recognize which flowers are worth visiting and find its way back.

That skill is the bumblebee's whole job. A bee that can't reliably tell flowers apart brings home less food and contributes less to the colony, and none of that shows up if you're only checking whether the chemical killed the bee outright.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide on Earth, sprayed across a massive share of US agriculture, in exactly the fields bees are out foraging in every day.

The best mosquito repellent for your patio costs $20 and runs on a wall outlet: a fan.

Mosquitoes are terrible fliers with a top speed of about 1-2 miles an hour, slower than you walk, and they struggle to make headway against even a gentle breeze. Point an oscillating fan at your outdoor seating area and they'll physically struggle to get to you.

It works on two levels too. A mosquito finds you by following the plume of carbon dioxide you exhale, plus the heat and scent rising off your skin. A fan scatters all of it and erases the trail that leads them in. So it knocks them out of the air and helps hide you from their senses at the same time.

This isn't folk wisdom. The CDC notes that fans reduce mosquito landings, and studies have found that using a fan can substantially reduce mosquito bites.

Citronella candles offer only modest protection and are generally much less effective than a fan or EPA-registered repellents. Plug in a fan, aim it at the table, and take your evening back.

Cuba has significant natural wealth -- sugar, tobacco, nickel.

American corporations extracted that wealth while ordinary Cubans lived in poverty.

Cubans revolute and kick the U.S. out.

The U.S. places a 67-year embargo on them, forcing them into deeper poverty.Then tightens it with a specific embargo on oil.
