A junior associate asked me if he could expense an Uber home after working until 1:30 AM.

I said absolutely.

Then I asked why he needed one.

He said the subway was running infrequently that late.

I asked how infrequently.

He didn’t know.

Taxi.

I asked why it wasn’t the preferred option.

I asked whether there was a medical reason he couldn’t walk four miles.

Now we were getting somewhere.

At 2:05 AM he sent me a revised analysis including estimated travel times, safety considerations, and productivity impact the following morning.

Uber won.

Strong memo.

Approved.

Then Finance rejected the expense because he hadn’t used the firm’s corporate Uber account.

He asked me what to do.

I told him to appeal.

Three weeks later, the reimbursement committee approved $64.

He spent 7.2 hours getting it.

That’s $7,920 of legal time.

But you cannot put a price on fiscal discipline.
