Congratulations to John for his @BSACdivers award in recognition of his lifesaving efforts during a SCUBA-diving accident off the coast of Pembrokeshire.
John, an Immediate Care Practitioner, was off-duty enjoying a day of wreck diving when another diver encountered difficulties during their dive. John along with other members of the dive party provided immediate life saving care to the casualty following their recovery to the dive boat.
Following on from the immediate care provided, they co-ordinated with the @MCA_media , @WelshAmbulance and the duty Dive Medicine Doctor from @DDRCPlymouth, to optimise the care provided and outcome for the casualty.
Dive accidents are thankfully a rare, this case does however serve to remind us all of the dangers associated with this sport, the need for rapid intervention when accidents happen and the importance of diver training with regards to emergencies and diver rescue.
In highlighting this case we hope that this provides a catalyst to clinicians, across all disciplines of pre-hospital and emergency care, to recognise that dive related incidents do occur around the British coast and we should be familiar in their initial management. Advice and support for clinicians can be sourced via local #TraumaDesk’s and the DDRC.
This coming weekend sees our first selection day, to bring new team members on board, since 2021.
As such, this week sees many of our #VolunteerMedics and trustees putting together the final touches to the day.
We wish all candidates the very best!
