Continuing our celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, we wish to highlight some remarkable stories of Bermuda’s contribution to the war effort.
With massive volumes of transatlantic mail passing through the island, the Imperial Censorship Station—hidden beneath the Hamilton Princess Hotel—employed over 1,000 personnel, including young female “Censorettes,” to intercept enemy communications. Their efforts led to the capture of 40+ German spies and the takedown of the largest Nazi spy ring in the U.S. ✉️
In 1941, Bermudians raised today’s equivalent of £1.4M to fund four RAF Spitfires, including “Bermuda I,” tragically lost in combat. ✈️
In 1942, Winston Churchill made a secret visit, thanking the island for its vital wartime role. He told Bermuda’s House of Assembly, “You have cause to be proud that it has fallen to your lot to make this important contribution to a better world”. 🇧🇲🇬🇧
In 1944, the captured German U-505 submarine was secretly brought to Bermuda, where the U.S. Navy used its codebooks to intercept enemy messages.🌊
