At $0.79 per MWh (3/4 of a cent per kWh), yesterday was the cheapest daily average price for electricity in Alberta's power market history.
By a wide margin!
(And these are nominal prices, unadjusted for inflation...)
In 2024, investment is solar PV is set to grow to $500 billion, leading the transformation of the power sector

When in Liverpool, it’s important to drop by Sir Paul McCartney’s childhood home, where so many legendary Beatles songs were written, and admire the solar PV system 2 houses down
When we @pembina proposed a coal phase out in Alberta in 2009 all we were told was why it couldn’t be done. Our biggest mistake was saying it would take longer than it did.

Today, utility-scale batteries paired with solar PV are already competitive with new coal plants in some countries like India
In just the next few years, batteries + solar will be cheaper than new natural gas plants in the US & new coal in China 👉 https://t.co/O0fAZmGwQU
Since 2010, battery costs have fallen by more than 90% — offering opportunities to cut emissions in road transport & electricity
In 2023, electric car sales rose to almost 14 million. And battery storage deployment in the power sector more than doubled 👉 https://t.co/7I0xEFhKSW
The pace of the transition to EVs will hinge on their cost
In China, more than 60% of electric cars sold in 2023 were already cheaper than conventional equivalents
Competition & innovation are expected to bring down prices in other major markets 👉 https://t.co/4Zk5zB9HAR
@DanWoy I definitely take the point about owners being reluctant, but if a financial case can be made for an expensive stand-alone battery, that could potentially be worth it and might help finance the vehicle.
@DanWoy I get the technical allure! Business case eludes me a bit, but happy to be proven wrong. I feel like the growth of EVs brings this same ability for "free". Won't be long they will no longer be scattershot, and some % would be reliabily available.
Battery manufacturing capacity has more than tripled in the last 3 years
Completing all announced projects would be enough to meet demand to 2030 on our net zero path
But manufacturing is concentrated in only a few countries, creating supply chain risks: https://t.co/HLayLTZXhb
In 2024, natural gas generation on an average April day in California hit a 7-year low.
This is a significant trend reversal from what we saw from 2021 to 2023 in CAISO.
