Here's interesting snippet. Notice the flag on 18 is white, whereas holes 10 to 17 have red flags. Thomas Hamilton, a businessman, built that red building, The Grand Hotel in 1895 and according multiple historical accounts, he made it red so that the flag was hard to spot after the R&A rejected his membership application.
