Final post in a thread of three on this subject…. If the proportion of racing’s income from bookmakers in 2026 was the same as it was in 2016 (62.5%) total prize money would be £265m - an uplift of 36% or £70m.
However there has never been any agreement in place as to how this income should be distributed with the result that participants share has dropped from 62.5% to 45% with “others” retaining the 17.5%.
The result is a spiral of decline with Owners exiting followed by Trainers and Breeders. The only way to reverse this is to restore the % paid to participants and agree how this will be shared in the future. Fair distribution is the only way to create a sustainable sport which is not what we have at the moment.
I stress again that I cannot vouch for the precise accuracy of the numbers I quote, they are ChatGPT’s best efforts to navigate the lack of transparency we are subjected to but they correlate with betting industry figures.
Either way we need to come together to sort this urgently - all lose on the current trajectory. Don’t think we have time to wait for a new Chair to start at BHA which doesn’t look like happening this year. Let’s make the discussion happen now

Brexit was sold as Britain “taking back control”.
Instead the country weakened its economic power and economic power determines who owns what.
Which is how one of Britain’s most pro-Brexit newspapers ends up owned by a German media group.
Irony doesn’t get much better.
Imagine just sitting on the couch until you’re 15 and then trying to play high school football 😮
