“Online culture is not merely compensating for the real world, but outcompeting it….40% of 14-to 17-yr-olds spend at least six hours a day online – the equivalent of a school day.”

with tiktok temporarily closed, maybe it’s time to rethink how we use the internet. imagine if instagram shut down at 9 pm, like a grocery store, or X closed at 11 pm (open late, but not 24/7).
we might all feel a little less pressure—to read, to post, to exist online all the time. maybe we’d sleep better, feel calmer, even be happier. a digital commons with operating hours, enforcing temporal boundaries. it would disrupt the dopamine factory, recalibrate the rhythm of online life, & impose artificial scarcity to make digital engagement feel intentional, not compulsive.
Absolutely heartbreaking scene at table next to me in the pub right now. Mother and father, probably early 30s and their son, about 5. Son: “mummy, look at this. Mummy look at this”. Mummy hasn’t looked up once from watching TikTok. Earphones in. No acknowledgment at all for past 30 minutes. Father looks up from phone occasionally. A totally typical scene played out across the country.
The worst men you’ve ever met say “books are obsolete,” but print sales have been rising since the pandemic. Library use has surged among young people. Folks are hungry for experiences they can’t get on a screen.
