@KristenStieffel It's the Victorian era. Boys would have been sent to boarding school to learn to be men. Their mothers had little to do with their education and upbringing.
@PhdRachel Bicycling was a huge craze for women. It allowed them freedom of movement they never had before. Susan B. Anthony was a fan. https://t.co/2QDh2zuJXJ
@huntinghistory She's ahead of her time. Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903. Deeds not words. Smashing windows, destroying art, bombing an MP's home, practicing jiu-jitsu for self-defense. Is Eudoria a time traveler from the future?
@boxingoctopus I did, awhile ago. I probably will get them for my nieces for Christmas and reread them. I discovered there are graphic novel adaptations. The girls are more likely to read those than the originals.
@GeekyPedagogy I thought he looked younger than Enola but we were to assume he was 18. I nitpicked that historical detail big time. He needs to be confirmed in the Lords, make a maiden speech, establish himself.
@corinnetags That moment was particularly well done. After tweens read about Enola and get a bit older, they can read about Mary who hails from Limehouse in The Agency series by Y.S. Lee.
@knit1write2 @EmilyContois Thank you. That was my memory but I didn't bother to try to request the books from the library since I plan to buy them for my nieces for Christmas.
@LWavghist In 1913-14 the moves were probably real. Suffrajiujitsu the application of martial arts or self-defence techniques by members of the Women's Social and Political Union during 1913/14.
@LWavghist @rinnymarie Me too, me too! SO pretty yet sooo uncomfortable and restricting. I really want to bring bloomer costumes back in fashion. Pretty and functional.
@mimicofmodes I think that's the point. The neighborhood, the shop, the boarding house are all places a woman of Enola's class wouldn't go. It's part of her disguise.
