Dear anonymous lady, I would not simply tell you to “lower your standards.”
I would advise you to separate standards from preferences.
Character, kindness, shared values, emotional maturity, work ethic, financial responsibility and the ability to carry responsibility are standards.
“He must earn more than I do” is a preference.
It is not an illegitimate preference, but as your income rises, the number of men who satisfy it necessarily becomes smaller.
You are entitled to retain that preference, but you should understand the trade-off.
Income matters in marriage.
However, “earns more than me” is often a crude proxy for what you may truly need: stability, ambition, discipline, generosity, competence and compatible expectations about money and family life.
A man’s current salary is only one data point in what could become a life long partnership.
Is he diligent?
Does he manage money responsibly?
Does he have direction?
Can he celebrate your success without feeling diminished by it?
Will he carry his share of the family’s responsibilities?
Can you agree on the kind of home you want to build?
A man can earn more than you and still be a terrible husband.
Another can earn less and be secure, responsible, industrious and an excellent life partner.
But let me be equally honest: if you know that you would struggle to admire or respect a husband who earns less than you, do not marry one while pretending that it does not matter.
That would eventually be unfair to both of you.
Either reconsider the preference sincerely or accept that keeping it may mean a smaller pool and possibly a longer search.
The pattern I noticed is common in elite professional circles for a reason.
Career success and traditional pairing dynamics often pull in opposite directions.
You can have both, but it usually requires intentionality, earlier prioritisation of partnership, and realistic expectations about the market.
Ignoring the data does not make the data disappear.
Wishing you clarity, not just a husband.
(The right one is worth the wait but the clock is also real.)
