When you live in the third world, you realize how nobody trusts each other, even for basic things 💀

You live here long enough and you develop that mentality also, at least partially

Just today I went to the local corner store for some beer in Tepito of Mexico City 🇲🇽

As an alcoholic I’ve gone there every single day for almost 3 months, buying liquor or beer

I’m a regular and spend probably around 4000 to 6000 pesos a month

More than what some Mexicans spend on rent for a room in CDMX

I'm the King of Gentrifying Liquor Stores 💰

But during my earliest visits to this one store, the owner would get sometimes tense whenever I bought those 1.2 Liter beer bottles:

“You sure you going to bring this back right? Really really sure?”

Almost like he's low key accusing me of stealing his bottles

Like yeah bro. I ain't hoarding empty beer bottles. Who would do that?? Lmao 🤣

Over time he became a tiny more friendly.

I only became a regular here instead of other stores because they’re very transparent with prices marked on most products and they ring them up for you too

No third world funky monkey pricing like in other stores here.

And he also sells my favorite Mexican beer: Leon 🍺

But today he got tense again.

I brought back the beer bottle from last night and handed him the little paper that says I’m owed 10 pesos.

Immediately he goes “this ain’t ours!” because the paper doesn’t look like what they normally give customers.

I insisted it was.

“Who gave this to you? His name?”

“No se su nombre…. El negro.”

Meaning the black guy they got working here

We went back and forth with him arguing the beer definitely didn’t come from his store until he finally snapped 👇

“Are you trying to steal from me???”

Brah what lmao.

You really think I, as a regular who spends 4000 to 6000 here per month, is trying to hustle you for 10 pesos or 50 cents?

I’m an esteemed expat from America, not a broke Mexican. I almost felt insulted 😤

Just days ago the same worker, El Negro, gave me the wrong change as I wrote about on Twitter

Too much, not less.

I insisted he did and he was confused (I don’t think he speaks Spanish well).

So no, I ain’t out here stealing 10 pesos from small businesses lmao

I almost walked right there because it's just 10 pesos but I wasn't about to be called a liar and a thief

“Check the cameras bro. I bought this around 11 or 12 last night" I said

He pulled his phone out and started looking 📱

After 10 minutes of standing there in a standoff over a measly 50 cents, he took the ticket and handed me the 10 pesos.

I guess he found the footage of me walking in or whatever.

Didn't even apologize for accusing me of some scam over 10 pesos lol

I ain’t mad tho.

It’s just funny how in the third world locals get so tense over pennies 🤑

And while this is a pretty small and irrelevant example, I could go on about how low trusting so many locals can be. From irrelevant to more important examples.

And while it was probably just a easy mistake, I don’t know if I’ll keep spending my money at that same store

Not only do they have a worker handing out fake receipts, but also accusing regulars of theft who spend hundreds of dollars over 50 cents?

This is just one incident among others where the dude was freaking out over beer bottles

I've seen him interrogate others rudely on other occasions over if "they'll return the bottle? Are you sure you will?"

In all my 9 years in Mexico, I’ve never been to another store, even in other Mexican ghettos, where they treat selling beer like an illegal drug deal.

Most other stores end up kissing my ass and being nice to me once I become a regular
