Oxford Professor @trishgreenhalgh's team has examined the evidence for the safety of deploying physician associates in the UK.
TL:DR - it doesn't exist.
Her systematic review is out today.
A hugely significant piece of work that has major implications for the #LengReview.
🧵/ This heartbreaking case highlights why so many doctors like me have begged @NHSEngland & @DHSCgovuk to stop endangering NHS patients by substituting doctors with non-medically trained PAs
We've been dismissed & smeared as "toxic bullies".
Please read this thread & decide.
I’m in utter disbelief!!
The GMC have explicitly stated they are FULLY AWARE that PA & AA courses fall short of THEIR OWN GMC standards
….but are prepared to take the reputational hit by approving them?!
WHY?!!
WTAF is going on in the GMC?!
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
The GMC's minutes from their MAPs Programme Board meetings over the last twelve months make for some hair-raising reading.
"Is it time for us to lead, to convene, or to follow?" asks the GMC of itself.
Some things that particularly stand out:
🚨PLEASE READ🚨: FOI requests reveal STUDENT PAs covering doctor shifts on doctor rotas at @RBNHSFT - previously in the news due to the death of Christopher Tucker involving care given by a PA.

☣️Hello @CUH_NHS
Someone is seriously concerned about this advert for Dermatology Consultant(Mohs Surgery) job
The pay is criminally low (£63,527)and why, in the name of all things holy, do they have nearly the same pay as a newly qualified Physician Assistant(£60,000)
Thanks
ED is a lost cause in the UK
Out of interest, do we ever see job adverts for untrained people ‘working at the level of’ advanced physios, dieticians, nurses etc?
Or is it just that being a doctor is so easy that anyone can do it?
🚨The PA Megathread🚨

People, it is imperative to understand that this is not ok. This is not "modernization", this is some 5th world kind of s**t. I want the public to understand that this is not how medicine/surgery works. Some 100+ years ago standardized medical training became a necessity because
Non-surgeons are doing surgeries on you and your loved ones.
This needs to be stopped ASAP.
But did you also know non doctors are being used to replace doctors right across the NHS?
By 2034, in the NHS, the chances will be that you won’t ever see a doctor.
Is this the NHS you and your loved ones deserve?
🔴NEW: NHS England orders hospitals to stop using physician associates to cover doctors’ shifts after @Telegraph investigation reveals that the practice is widespread.

This is real
Medical notes where a PA has deemed that their title is interchangeable with that of a fully qualified doctor
I’m getting tired of this nonsense
This is, of course, at GOSH.
Another absolutely heart-breaking and gut wrenching read. Christopher Tucker had a cystoscopy performed by a PA despite clear signs of sepsis, with no antibiotics considered or prescribed.
The PA has since started working elsewhere.
#Justice4Christopher
I said I would send out an FOI to find out more information and would share when I heard back. (As apparently it’s my job to chase illegal prescriptions and not the CQC’s). Thank you @JanetEastham for investing this properly and thoroughly.
A short🧵.
