I will teach my son that the comfortable house i am giving him is not his paradise, it is mine, and that he cannot inherit a paradise. Adam did not lose eden, he was freed from it. a garden someone else planted is just a pleasant temple, and the man who grows old inside it dies as a guest. the world is full of sons who never left, who took the safe position, the warm approval, the easy chair, and who now in their forties sit at dinners speaking in the voices of their fathers . i pity them, but i will not let him become them. he must understand that the day when he does the thing that makes me angry, the thing that makes his mother cry, the thing that risks everything he has been handed, that day is his birth. i can only give him the exit, not the land. the land he must take with his own fear drenched hands. and i will make sure he knows that i would rather he be kicked out and build a leaky shack on his own ground than stay in my walled garden forever
Ive watched the same specimen for months now, at my gym a thick necked ox of a man who moves iron like it owes him money and in between sets sits scrolling with the slack jawed expression of a medicated cow. all that magnificent tissue and nothing upstairs running it, a temple with no God. and i know his opposite too, a pale pumpkin seed of a man, all brain and brittle, who could recite Aristotle on discipline while being physically incapable of defending his own mother. both of them are half men. the body is the temple and the spirit must live in it. a soul carried around in a ruined vessel goes rancid
God is not going to drag your bitter half formed soul into a promised land, it would spoil the milk and spoil the honey, and you would wreck it within a year. the thirst is teaching you. the rations are building someone who can receive a promise without choking on it. blessed are those who walk it without cursing the sand, for every grain grinds a slave into a son
A man who is genuinely good will age slower than a men who is not. something in the body knows when it is being ruled by the right thing, and preserves itself accordingly
Everyone is preparing for the black swan they already know about which means it's not a black swan anymore it's just a gray pigeon you're pretending is rare. the real black swan is the scenario so stupid-sounding you'd mock them for even considering it
Keep your hands rough, your belly small, your life cheap. keep your cupboard stocked, your soul ready to eat dust. so that when the locusts come for the fields, for the currency, you will stand while the softer ones kneel and beg for bread. and you will bless the name that feeds you anyway
