How opportunities move around circles

Let me cite an example (true life chain of events that happened to me and my circle)

1. In 2008, I got a job in Company X

2. I met a guy there (let's call him A). He was a contract staff. He had been there before me but he was a contract staff, so earning lower than me, a full staff. He taught me some things - raising journal, company ERP use etc

2. In 2009, while in office, I overheard my HR officer say she needed a good chartered accountant to fill a role. I spoke to her that I had a few chartered accountants in my circle. I called them. They sent their CVs to me. One was picked after interviews. Let's call him B.

3. B became my colleague in that company from 2009. He was also my room mate in OAU.

4. A year later, 2010. They needed another accountant. B submitted CV of another guy (let's call him C). He was his classmate in Ife. He was invited for interview. He passed.

5. By 2010, three of us from the same 2006 set in OAU (me, B and C) were in same department in that company. All first class. All chartered accountant.

6. Later in 2010, there was another vacancy in that department. B submitted the CV of D, also an old friend from OAU, but a year our senior. He was invited for interview, passed and got the job. We became 4 OAU guys in that department by 3rd year of first person (me) getting in.

6. In October 2011, while in office, I saw an advert in Guardian for a role in another company (let's call it Company Y). I sought my old buddy A's advice and he encouraged me to apply. If relevant, I got married in same 2011, earlier in the year, and A traveled from Lagos to Ilorin to attend. My childhood friend that was meant to be my bestman got stuck on the road and he stepped in as bestman on that day.

7. Long story short. I got the job and resumed in the new company in 2012.

8. In 2014, an email was sent in my company (Company Y) that they needed to fill some roles and staff were encouraged to refer solid candidates. My buddy - A, still a contract staff in Company X ticked the boxes for one of the roles in terms of experience and qualification. I quickly valled him to send his CV and pushed his CV to HR.

9. He was interviewed and got the job. Permanent staff. 4X his contract staff in Company X.

10. There was another opening in 2017 or thereabouts and I submitted D's CV. He was interviewed but he didn't get the job. Someone else from same Company X - but not within our immediate circle - got it.

11. I quit Company Y in 2022.

12. Founded a real estate company later. B was my 6th customer in my real estate business. The contract staff that was earning less than 150k before 2014. And the guy that taught me how to raise journal.

Everyone here (me, B, C, D) finished from OAU and were friends of sorts from university. Only A, the contract staff I met there, didn't. All five people in this narration are also chartered accountants. 3 of the 5 also made first class.

Solid CVs make things easy.

This is how circles work.

When you see graduates of UNILAG dominating a department or a company, this is how it works - information share. Outside graduate trainee roles, many jobs are not advertised. Information just circulates.

When I returned to painting in 2010 after being away for more than a decade working as a graphic designer, I made a commitment to paint every other day - late at night and early in the morning.

I created collection after collection without making a single sale except for few commission portraits. But I kept painting. I kept learning. I kept improving.

Then, in 2016, someone approached me and bought paintings worth ₦5 million.

I share this to encourage someone: don't judge your future by your present results. Every hour you invest in your craft is preparing you for an opportunity you may not yet see.

Stay consistent. Keep showing up. Your breakthrough often arrives after the season when most people would have given up.

I was so poor in Mathematics that I was nicknamed "I don't know Math (sic)" in Class 6 because I gave that as answer to my teacher when he asked me a question in class.

JSS 1-3, same story.

I think I had P7 in it in Junior WAEC.

SS 1-2, similar story.

Then in January 1999, second term into SS2, with GCE staring me in the face, I attended a private lesson. The teacher taught me Factorization and I realized I got it. His explanation was spot on.

For the first time in my life, I understood a math topic clearly.

Then I went back to JSS 1 math texbook for personal study and finished it within a week. Then moved to JSS 2 and finished it within 2 weeks. Then JSS 3 math, then SS1, then SS2.

Then to GCE past questions.

I sat for GCE in August 1999 or so during holiday after SSS2 and made a B2.

Then WAEC in SSS3 in May 2000 and got B2 again (felt bad for this because I wanted A1).

Meanwhile, I saw that many of my school mates in Science classes (who did Further Math) did not even have B2 that I had in Math in WAEC and that prompted me to enrol for another private lesson in Further Math. "If I could score higher in Math than many science students that did Further math, I should be able to do Further math too".

I practiced a couple of topics in Further Math - Calculus, Partial Fraction etc - while waiting for OAU to resume, knowing I would need Mathematics to do well in Economics that I got admission for.

Math soon became my favourite subject. Needless to say I had A in all but one of the Math courses I did from Year 1 to graduation in Ife.

From being poor in Math to it becoming my best subject, it was a comeback I never saw coming. A turnaround that contributed largely to who I am today (my eventual grade in Economics helped largely by my scores in Math courses).

In 2022, 23 years after, I searched for and reconnected with the private teacher that saved me in SS 2 in 1999.

One thing I never liked doing is introducing people but most times when people meet through me, they end up getting married.

Paid my staff five days ago as I do every month.

Years ago a new hire asked me, almost nervously, "So when should I expect my salary?" Like it was a favour.

It is not a favour. A salary is a debt. You worked, I owe, I pay. Fast as I can.

If you run anything and people have to wonder whether the money is coming, you have already lost the best of them in their heads.

Pay people well. Pay them on time. It is the cheapest loyalty you will ever buy.
