The Story of Ham Serunjogi: Building Africa's Fintech Unicorn.
Born and raised in Uganda, Ham Serunjogi is a brilliant testament to the power of global vision combined with African roots. Long before he was a renowned fintech CEO, he was a dedicated athlete who proudly represented Uganda in swimming at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. His leadership journey began early when he served as president of the Student Representative Council at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.
His athletic and academic discipline soon earned him a scholarship to Grinnell College in the United States. While earning his degree in Economics, Ham did not just stick to the books and the swimming pool. He actively explored technology by co-developing a voice recording app. Most importantly, he met Maijid Moujaled, the college friend who would later become his co-founder in revolutionizing African finance.
After graduating in 2016, Ham landed a prestigious job at Meta in Dublin, Ireland. However, the corporate tech world could not contain his entrepreneurial drive. In 2018, he teamed up with Moujaled to launch Chipper Cash. Their mission was clear: to solve the massive, expensive problem of cross-border payments across the African continent.
The platform quickly exploded in popularity, expanding operations across Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, and the US. Global investors took serious notice. Chipper Cash raised millions in early funding rounds and eventually caught the eye of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos Expeditions participated in a massive $30 million Series B round, marking Bezos's first significant investment in an African startup.
The financial momentum never stopped. By securing over $300 million in total funding, Chipper Cash skyrocketed to a valuation of over $1 billion to achieve highly coveted "unicorn" status. Ham's individual brilliance was also globally recognized when he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 finance list and appointed to President Biden’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement.
Fast forward to 2026, and Ham Serunjogi's empire has fundamentally transformed the African financial landscape. Chipper Cash is no longer just a payment app; it is a vital economic bridge connecting millions of individuals, diaspora members, and businesses globally. Ham continues to stand as a titan of African tech, proving every single day that indigenous solutions can scale to become world-class global enterprises.
Guys, good education and discipline still matter🙌
