Spain, I believe, is about 2,500 euros a month, Belgium 3500, France only about 1200 (still higher than UK). I live in France and you now have to have worked 43 years to be eligible for full state pension.

@DanWuori @yayareapolitic I live near the border of Italy and whenever we visit I feel that culturally it’s a place where children are enjoyed and welcomed by the community. It’s very child friendly. You don’t feel kids are an annoyance there.

@sn1cktw1t @dylanwiliam I agree, phonics is not the only tool and that’s not what I’m saying. Literacy is developed through a rich language environment, supportive adults, access to many kinds of texts and, as you say, other tools. Phonics is a necessary tool though, particularly when learning to read.

@sn1cktw1t @dylanwiliam I get that, of course phonics is not literacy, it’s a part of it. English is not an easy language to decode. Morphology is great for helping kids understand the language, word roots, suffixes. In the early years of reading though phonics is an important building block.

@mdmetan @dylanwiliam Not sure 🧐. I don’t think Dyslexia can be prevented but barriers can be overcome. Protecting self esteem is important. Even if too young for a diagnosis, signs of struggling with words needs extra support asap so that children don’t feel lost and can find access to literacy.

@mdmetan @dylanwiliam I work with dyslexic children, the approach would be the same, working on phonological and phonemic awareness, teaching sound/grapheme correspondence. But working memory and self esteem is often an issue. Multisensory teaching and overlearning helps. It can be an ongoing struggle

@dylanwiliam I’d also add that general phonological awareness is key to reading as well as phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness was highlighted in your research as having a high effect size: 0.74 I believe.

@sn1cktw1t @dylanwiliam I think it’s all. The issue is what they do when introduced to unknown words in texts without images for example. In order to read we need to have an understanding of sound/grapheme correspondence to tackle the unknown in order for words to become sight words.
