The Miami Herald reports that the DeSantis administration redirected roughly $36 MILLION originally earmarked for health care, child welfare, and opioid recovery into state-funded TV advertising that functioned as political messaging ahead of Florida’s 2024 ballot fights.

Not campaign money.
Public money.

The funds were legally designated for:
• Medicaid-related services
• Children’s programs
• Opioid settlement relief

Instead, according to the Herald’s review of contracts and state spending records, that money was rerouted into advertising campaigns that closely mirrored messaging used to oppose abortion and marijuana ballot initiatives — without naming the amendments directly.

That distinction matters.
And it’s the loophole.

This reporting builds on earlier revelations involving the Hope Florida Foundation, tied to First Lady Casey DeSantis, which received $10 million from a Medicaid settlement that normally would have gone back to public health programs.

That money then moved through nonprofits and into political spending channels.

No court has yet ruled this criminal.
No charges have been filed.

But experts interviewed by the Herald describe the pattern as:
• Diversion of public funds
• Circumvention of campaign finance safeguards
• Taxpayer dollars repurposed for political objectives

In plain terms:

👉 Money meant for kids, health care, and addiction recovery
