Thank you for your work supporting Black Men. Brothers are dying from overdose at a high rate and the issue continues to worsen. Grateful for your work @VoteWorrell and service on Black Men & Boys Commission!
Last Council meeting, along with Councilor Flynn, I filed for a hearing to address the rise in opioid overdose deaths among older Black men in Boston. From 2017 to 2023, deaths increased by 242%. This is a crisis hitting our communities hard — and too many are navigating it alone
It’s so rare as a lawmaker, when you plant a seed, that you can see it bear its fruit in your lifetime, but today is one of those incredible days.
10 years ago as a Boston City Councilor, I championed and helped pass game-changing legislation to lift the cap on liquor licenses in Boston. The cultural and economic impact of those reforms are undeniable in the restaurants that have been able to open, remain open, and become staples of neighborhoods — from Hyde Park to East Boston, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and all across our city.
And when I first took this issue on a decade ago, I was hopeful it would set a new floor for future reform, and I am so proud to see that playing out today.
The legislation we celebrated today builds upon the reforms we enacted in 2014, and it will give every Bostonian the chance at an equitable opportunity to build wealth and community.
Restaurants are the economic, social, and cultural anchors of our streets, and I am so grateful to @MassGovernor, @SenLizMiranda, @BrotherChris617, and @VoteWorrell, and every restauranteur, and advocate whose sweat equity made today possible.
So let’s raise a figurative drink to today’s achievement and roll up our sleeves tomorrow to actualize the potential of this game-changing legislation.
