De bel gaat. Mijn moeder doet open. Op de stoep staat Rob Jetten, naast een fotograaf en een vlag die iemand zorgvuldig uit het beeld van de buren houdt.

„Is uw zoon thuis?”

„Hij is dertig”, zegt mijn moeder.

„Geweldig. Precies de leeftijd waarop Nederland op hem kan rekenen.”

„Hij woont nog bij mij.”

Jetten kijkt even naar de fotograaf. Die laat zijn camera zakken.

Ik kom de trap af. De premier schudt mijn hand alsof hij hem alvast aan Nederland overdraagt. „Ons land heeft jonge mensen nodig die verantwoordelijkheid nemen.”

„Ik werk vijf dagen per week.”

„Nog meer verantwoordelijkheid.”

„Ik betaal belasting.”

„Prachtig.”

„En iedere maand mijn studieschuld.”

„Dat noemen wij investeren in de toekomst.”

„Welke toekomst?”

Jetten wijst naar buiten. Het is een mistige dinsdagochtend. De fotograaf vindt het prachtig licht.

De premier vertelt over veiligheid, dienstbaarheid en alles wat wij samen moeten beschermen. Ik vraag of ik met mijn salaris ergens in die gezamenlijke toekomst kan wonen. Hij zegt dat woningbouw ingewikkeld is. Veel partijen. Veel procedures. Veel uitdagingen.

„En de krijgsmacht?”

„Daar kun je je meteen aanmelden.”

Mijn moeder komt uit de keuken. „Moet ik zijn uniform ook wassen?”

De premier lacht. De fotograaf is gelukkig weer begonnen.

„Kijk,” zeg ik, „ik stel een deal voor. Een betaalbaar huis en kwijtschelding van mijn studieschuld. Dan kom ik luisteren naar uw verhaal over offers.”

Jettens glimlach wordt kleiner. Nederland moet wel realistisch blijven, zegt hij. Een huis kun je niet zomaar regelen. Een studieschuld verdwijnt niet vanzelf.

„Mijn leven ook niet”, zeg ik.

Even is het stil. Dan vraagt hij of hij misschien toch een foto mag maken. Desnoods hier op de trap. Moeder tussen ons in. Het zou mooi laten zien hoe verschillende generaties samen verantwoordelijkheid dragen.

„Prima”, zegt mijn moeder. „Maar dan schrijft u onder die foto dat mijn zoon nog bij mij woont omdat hij geen huis kan betalen.”

De fotograaf laat zijn camera weer zakken.

Jetten bedankt ons voor het open gesprek. Op de stoep draait hij zich nog één keer om. „We moeten wel met elkaar blijven praten.”

„Graag”, zeg ik. „Bel maar aan als u een sleutel heeft.”

Jongens, ga niet in dienst. Eis eerst een huis en een streep door die studieschuld. Eis bovendien de kinderen van politici en koninklijke familie als je “slapies”.
