The outcome was catastrophic. More than 50,000 devotees and defenders who refused to abandon the sacred site were brutally slaughtered. The plunder was unprecedented: tons of gold, silver, and precious stones carted away to his capital in Ghazni (modern-day Afghanistan). The temple itself was heavily damaged and its central religious icons completely destroyed.

The sack of Somnath became a lasting symbol of the violent clash between Turkish invaders and the cultures of the Indian subcontinent, a historical wound whose deep echoes are still felt in India to this day.
