Had a blast this past week out wandering in North Dakota’s prairies. Can’t believe we’re already through the field season and summer (Gadwall nest, Clay-colored Sparrow nest, Black-eyed Susan’s patch, and Common Harebell patch). Many thanks go out to our cooperating landowners!
Our forth and final summer field season is off to a great start! Prairie conditions have been favorable, with warm temps and “normal” precipitation. Photos: GADW, CCSP, VESP, and the northern lights. We’re approaching the halfway point and I’m already starting to miss this place.
Thanks for coming out and spending some time in the field with us! We’re lucky to have research partners like you! Looking forward to getting in the field and seeing what this summer has in store for us.
Spent some time in the field recently with @TjLinder and his crew. Got to be an ornithologist again for a day. Weather was great but the smoke was terrible. Have a great summer and good luck nest searching! @Nature_MN@FelegeLab
Year 4! Another green year ahead of us? Record snowfall has filled shallow, seasonal wetlands and provided moisture to spark growth in cool season grasses. Given the polarity of moisture the past few years, I’m excited to see what this last field season has in store.
A little less dry and a little more green out on the prairie today (left) than one exact year ago (right). A little warmth in the coming days and weeks will do a lot for the prairies, but they’re in much better shape already! Looking forward to whats in store for the summer!
@braydenhousel Initial conditions are looking good given the near record snowfalls in many areas of the state, but we’ll need May/June rain to complement the moisture from snowfall. Going forward into the summer, we’ll need that addt’l moisture to keep grass growing and wetlands from drying.
When your lek is covered in a couple of feet of snow & you have to dance, the next best dance floor is the road. Sharp-tailed grouse dancing & welcoming Spring! #grouse#lek#dancing#spring#snow#montana#prairie
