Red flags 🚩 in high school football strength and conditioning:
🚩Your primary lifts are for sets of 10
🚩Your plyo’s are after you lift and random
🚩Your “speed work” is full field sprints
🚩Lack of med ball throws
🚩Lack of unilateral squatting
🚩Olympic lifts for 5+ reps
To play Quarterback, you need to be urgently curious & obsessed with learning the details of the game.
No matter the level, style of play or where one is currently at on the depth chart - those with these qualities have a genuine shot of developing into Impact players.
Every young QB wants the highlight throws.
Side arm.
Off-platform.
Falling away.
Across the body.
And yes… the pros can do that. A quick search, and Josh Allen is a perfect example of creative throws.
But here’s what most people miss:
Before you can master the variables, you have to master your optimal stroke.
There is a version of your throwing motion that is biomechanically clean.
Balanced.
Efficient.
Repeatable.
That is your home base.
If you can’t repeat your optimal mechanics from a clean pocket, why are you trying to throw a no-look, three-quarter slot laser rolling left?
Steph Curry didn’t start by pulling from the logo fading sideways.
He shot thousands and thousands of routine shots.
From every inch of the front court.
Same base.
Same balance.
Same release.
Over and over and over again.
He built a flawless stroke first.
Only after that did the range expand.
Only after that did the creativity show up.
Only after that did the “wow” shots become efficient instead of reckless.
It’s the same at quarterback.
If your:
• base isn’t consistent
• hips don’t sequence properly
• elbow slot floats
• finish varies rep to rep
Then the variable arm angles will just magnify your inconsistencies.
The great ones can change arm slots because they own their mechanics.
They know where neutral is.
They know what balanced feels like.
They know how to get back to center.
Master the optimal throw first.
Then earn the right to be creative.
Highlights are built on habits.
Curt Cignetti on an Athletic article this week where a former player said that Curt is "Never satisfied and never happy.":
"No, that's not right. There's a lot of times I am happy. I just don't show I'm happy, and if I'm going to ask my players, the first play to play 150 the same regardless of the competitive circumstances, then I can't be seen on the sideline high fiving people and celebrating. What's the effect going to be? ... I'll smile and celebrate in the coaches room with the coaches... Of course, in the playoffs you've got to do 9 or 10 different press conferences after the game so that's about an hour and a half later... No, I do smile and I am happy at times."
“Pure progressions you read defenses. You read individual players within coverages and attack voids & vacancies based on how the play’s set up.”
I’ve always understood pure progression as an order to your process dependent on a key defender read as the activation.
A wise coach once said, "If you have to beg them to play, you will have to beg them to stay." You don't beg a Wolf to hunt... The Standard is the standard.
Kenny Dillingham didn't mince words after day two of ASU fall camp:
"Don't be mad going 5-7 ... 6-6 ... 3-9 ... Somebody has to go those records. We didn't practice bad. We didn't practice with passion ... It was a good practice for a bad team."

“You’re a triple option guy.”
Nah—I’m a spread guy who sees the value in adding triple option elements for a serious edge.
We run what you run:
zone, counter, duo…
We just believe adding a triple or RPO element to stress the defense.

If you are running a strength and conditioning program and your athletes get stronger but run slower and decrease their vertical the program isn’t working. Strength that doesn’t convert is a waste.
