Before a dam is designed, engineers need to understand the terrain-its elevation, slopes, drainage patterns and how water moves across the landscape. The Tana Water Works Development Agency @tanawwda is updating feasibility and pre-feasibility studies for 12 dams covering about 1,300 km², supported by newly acquired 0.5m Digital Terrain Models (DTMs).

To help turn this detailed data into practical engineering information, RCMRD is training 15 technical staff to process, analyse and apply DTMs in dam feasibility studies, engineering design and infrastructure planning. The goal is to strengthen in-house capacity to use geospatial data for better designs and more informed water infrastructure decisions.
