Unprecedented geopolitical conditions require unprecedented geopolitical solutions. Africa needs to stop burying its head in the sand, hoping that the usual suspects will busy themselves with Russia, Iran and China, and leave Africa alone.

That will not happen. In fact that has never happened.

For the past 500 years, Africa and its people have been directly involved in everything that has happened in the world, whether intentionally or not. The birth of mercantilism and global trade, the industrial revolution, the birth of European empires, the American empire, both world wars, the Cold War - all of these things had Africa, African people, and African resources front and centre of them.

Heck, the uranium in the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 came from Shinkolobwe mine in Katanga, DRC.

They are not leaving us alone, and we will not "non-align" our way out of the coming war. We will either pick a side or (as was the case the last 2 times), a side will be picked for us. Then we will once again end up having hundreds of thousands of men conscripted to die in someone else's war, and having our land used as a theatre in someone else's war, only to be completely written out of the story of the war afterward.

Instead of waiting indecisively until we again become the grass for elephants to fight on, someone - preferably the AES confederation - needs to take the sort of bold decision that Africa has traditionally been too chicken to make. Sign a nuclear defence treaty with China or Russia, and get them to place 5 or 6 nuclear ICBMs in Burkina Faso or Niger. Market it to them as a strategic opportunity to push back Western aggression by putting London, Paris and Brussels within a 10 minute striking distance of a Chinese DF-41 ICBM which travels at Mach 25 (31,000km/hr).

As soon as that happens and Sahelian Africa effectively has a nuclear deterrent, I guarantee that the inexplicably well-funded terror groups in the Sahel will melt away almost overnight - we know who is ultimately funding them.

And yes, I know that doing this will put the host country in line for Western sanctions, but 1.) These countries are already under sanctions anyway, and there is nothing they want to get from the empire that isn't already available elsewhere, and more importantly 2.) The empire will eventually come for them regardless. It's better to proactively fight on your toes than defensively resist on your heels.

It is this exact doctrine of strategically arming oneself to guarantee peace that has kept the empire's wars away from China, Russia and India. If you don't want the empire to attack you, you need to give them a better reason than "Because I won't attack you and I'm not a threat to you in any way." EVERYTHING is a threat to them, and the only threats they don't attack are the ones that have the capacity to return the blow with interest.

Unprecedented times require unprecedented decisions.

I consider this article by @ChidiOdinkalu to be compulsory reading for those who still wonder what all the fuss is about re @DeleFarotimi being abducted in Lagos to appear before an Ekiti Magistrate.

Thousands of Nigerians are charged to court every day and many of us do not get involved. If they are not remanded in custody for a misdemeanour unnecessarily, we leave them to defend themselves before a Court that we presume will give them a fair hearing.

I receive with much sadness the news of the arrest of Dele Farotimi, a strong voice for Democracy in Nigeria. As one who survived assassination attempts under Abacha I know where this points to no matter the excuses, all be it civil and not criminal, that are being thrown up for his arrest. Such actions led us to call for international sanctions which made the regime a pariah. It seems we are ready for that again. George Santayana warned that those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
