We met in 300 level. She was the loud one in class, I was the quiet one. But somehow we fit.

3 years of prayers together. 3 years of “after NYSC we’ll do it.” Her mom already called me “son.” My dad was saving for the bride price. We even picked a date. December 16th.

The last thing the pastor said before the introduction was, “Just go and do your medicals. It’s a formality.”

We went laughing. Holding hands.
Two weeks later, the results came.

The nurse looked at us and sighed. “You can still marry, but the risk for your children is very high. Sickle cell.”

We went home silent. That night she called me crying.
“Do you want our children to suffer, babe?”
I didn’t have an answer.

We tried to find a way. Prayers. Options. “Maybe God will do a miracle.” But both our families sat us down. Both pastors. Both doctors. The truth was the same.

We loved each other enough to let each other go.

On December 16th, there was no wedding. There was just me, in my room, looking at the suit I bought and the picture of us at the beach.

People say “there are other fish in the sea.”
But they don’t tell you what to do when that one fish was the whole ocean to you.

I still wish her well. I heard she’s married now. To an AA.
And me? I’m still learning how to love someone without seeing her face in it.

21st December 1974: The Day Gowon Drove Into Festac Village.

December 21, 1974. Lagos was hot, dusty, and moving fast.

Head of State General Yakubu Gowon decided he wasn’t going to wait for an official briefing.

He just showed up at Festac Village. No big announcement. Just his usual retinue of Police outriders and armed escorts leading the way, sirens low.

They rolled in through the very first entrance that had been built, what we still call 1st Gate today. Behind them was a construction site that never slept.

Festac was being built 24 hours a day because Nigeria had volunteered to host the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, FESTAC 77, and the village was meant to house thousands of artists and guests.

Gowon came to see it with his own eyes. The coordinator at the time, Mr. Simon Shodipo, walked him round and explained the delays. There had been strikes by building workers asking for civil service pay increases, plus constant congestion at Lagos Port holding up materials.

March 31 1978. President Jimmy Carter touched down in Lagos.

It was the first time a sitting US President was visiting sub-Saharan Africa, and Nigeria was the stop. Head of State was Lieutenant-General Olusegun Obasanjo. The mood was supposed to be historic, warm, new US policy toward Africa.

But behind the handshakes, there was tension.

The US Secret Service came with one job. Lock everything down. They wanted full control of Carter’s movement, his communication lines, and the physical perimeter everywhere he went in Lagos. Roads cleared without notice, buildings swept, agents everywhere with guns.
