In the 1920s, police in several U.S. cities enforced strict beach dress codes by measuring women’s swimsuits to make sure they weren’t too revealing.

Women who broke the rules could be fined, removed from the beach, or even arrested. Bikinis weren’t introduced until 1946, but they later faced similar bans around the world.
