During the I Inside the Old Year Dying tour, the dress made for PJ Harvey became a record of each city, marked by a drawing from a band member made before they stepped on stage.

Over 71 shows in 55 cities, the dress evolved into a visual document of the tour.

"Polly's wardrobe was always a work-in-progress. We experimented and tried many different ideas until we found what felt right - really it was about getting the show to feel exactly the way that Polly had envisioned.

The cape was in discussion from early days, but felt superfluous at the very beginning of the tour. Then with the summer festivals around the corner, the cape discussions started again.

It was about creating a visual focus for the outdoor shows, many of which would start before sundown. Where light was used in the theatres, the cape would draw focus at the start of the show.

Tests in miniature form - usually in paper give a representation of what it will look like in life-size. Finding the correct fabric and finally making it completely come to life.

The artwork is digitally printed onto a cotton linen base."

Then I look at what the artwork will look like. Where does it come from and what does it represent? Once these elements are all decided, putting the chosen artwork to the test – different configurations and formats.

I experimented with different ideas for what would appear on the cape and how it would be constructed. In the end Polly's drawing 'Realm of Orlam' from 'Orlam' was used in repetition around the cape, with the ever-watchful Orlam on the back.
