The firms' client, who is remaining anonymous, issued the following statement:
"This experience took away what should have been an exciting part of my freshman year.
Instead of building friendships, I ended up in the hospital with a serious medical condition.
I hope these criminal proceedings encourage students to speak up and reminds
organizations that no tradition is worth risking someone's life."Attorney Tammy Meyer of Metzger Rosta, LLP said the criminal charges underscore the dangers
of hazing.
"People often dismiss hazing as a college tradition or rite of passage. But when young
students are hospitalized with a potentially life-threatening medical condition, it becomes
painfully clear that this conduct is anything but harmless. Our hope is that these criminal
proceedings change the culture surrounding hazing before another student is seriously
injured."
Meyer continued:
"These proceedings are about accountability. Students should never be placed in a position
where they feel they must risk their health and safety simply to belong. We hope these
criminal proceedings, together with the civil case, lead to meaningful change that protects
future students."
Attorney Kirk LeBlanc of LeBlanc Nettles Law, LLC praised his client's willingness to come
forward.
"Our client came to Indiana University excited to begin the next chapter of his life. Instead,
he spent days in the hospital recovering from injuries that investigators allege resulted from
hazing. He has shown tremendous courage in coming forward, and we hope his willingness
to speak out encourages others to do the same."
LeBlanc added:
"Perhaps most troubling are the allegations that, after students suffered serious injuries,
there were efforts to conceal what had happened rather than ensure they received truthful
medical care and support. If those allegations are proven true, they represent a profound
failure of leadership and responsibility.
