On city-building, sustainability, design, transportation & everything else affecting the success of cities. Quoting @BrentToderian, associated w. @TODUrbanWorks
36-year-old can't breathe, rushed to ER. Lungs full of blood clots. Doc asks how many times he's had covid. Doesn't know, hasn't been testing. Doc guesses 3-4. Prescribes blood thinners for the rest of his life. 1/2
“The city is pitching a $60-million plan to fast-track Hamilton’s cycling network that would double the amount of bike lanes added or improved each year.”
The plan would add more than 140+ km of new or improved bikes lanes and multi-use pathways by 2028. https://t.co/WfDI4oCRzB
LISTEN: ‘We're afraid of walkable distances now?' — conspiracies & the '15-minute city,’ my NEW interview on @abcnews National Australian Radio @RadioNational. I don’t JUST explain with the concept really IS and ISN’T, I also call out the lies & tactics.

"You don't have to ban the car, but you DO have to rethink it. This isn’t a war on the car, it's a fight for better, more successful cities. The more people that bike, walk & take public transit, the better a city works for EVERYONE." — @BrentToderian in Belgium, 2019
This Spanish city centre has been car-free for 20 years. 12k people have moved into the centre since the ban. The Mayor says vehicles don’t have more right to public space than people — & he’s been re-elected 4 times since banning cars. Pontevedra via @WEF
“I believe chief planners should be influential champions for a better city. @Twitter should be seen as an effective tool for that. Planners should invest the time to understand Twitter & learn how to use it well.” — @BrentToderian in @WinnipegNews
NEW: There’s PLENTY to debate in this final vote of @Planetizen’s “Most Influential Urbanists, Past & Present,” (including my own #19 ranking ahead of many great urbanists who inspired ME). Still, I thank ALL who voted, & congratulate my many friends & heroes who were recognized!
New “100 Most Influential Urbanists, Past & Present” list released by @Planetizen this week! @BrentToderian ranked 19th! Congratulations to everyone recognized, including many friends and collaborators. May we ALL be more influential!
The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

.@Vladdo: I’ve read you’re not very happy with electric cars b/c they don’t help urban mobility, is that right?
@BrentToderian: That’s an overstatement. What concerns me is when EVs are held up as the solution. At most they’re part of the solution, & not the most important part.
“You can’t have good urban design if you prioritize the car; you have to give priority to people.” I give a VERY comprehensive interview to @VLADDO for @PapelPeriodico_ in Bogotá published in Spanish (Spanish speakers/readers, let me know how it sounds, & share the best quotes!)
“For as long as there have been cars, car manufacturers have aggressively been seeking to shape our cities for one primary reason: To design cities where that will help them sell more cars.” — @brenttoderian in @FastCompany https://t.co/gTVYi0FjMe

"When I started my career in the '90s, if you wanted to have your thinking transformed by another city, you had to take a trip to Copenhagen. Social media has given us all the daily ability to perceive and be inspired by those cities." — @BrentToderian https://t.co/TvwRj8to5K
First article I've seen delving into the rapid emergence of online anti-car forums.
One example: The r/fuckcars subreddit has quadrupled in size this year, to ~283,000 members.

"Too many times this week I've heard, 'we'd like to do more but we can't afford it.’ That's because you're thinking about things like planting trees and building bike-lanes like a cost instead of a cost-saver and an investment." — @BrentToderian https://t.co/UkC1VYWfNo
