In the medieval Gothic church of Magdeburg there is a World War One memorial with the middle and central figure looking like Adolf Hitler. The confusion usually comes from that figure his hair and the fact that Hitler was also active in World War One.. Speculation existed about the artist having done this on purpose but many historians claim that this is just a coincidence as many people had this haircut at that time.. It was created between 1927 and 1929 by the sculptor Ernst Barlach, who had himself served in World War I and became one of Germany’s leading anti-war artists. Rather than celebrating military heroism, he depicted the psychological and spiritual devastation caused by war. The work was removed in 1934 as it was “degenerate art” and placed in lock up in Berlin.
