When I interviewed with a Bank for the next level grade BO, I was an ABO then. During the interview, I committed to bring ₦3 billion in deposits within six months and ₦1 billion in loans.

The funny thing was that there was no cabal of such numbers anywhere. I was just an ambitious man making a commitment just to land a job.

My deposit portfolio was barely ₦1 billion and I was doing less than ₦200 million in loans at my current workplace.

I made a bigger commitment during the interview because I knew I had to. At that stage, nobody rewards conservative targets. If I wanted the role, I had to show that I was willing to think big and take responsibility for delivering results.

Finally I got the offer. Of course, I had doubts. I wondered if I had promised too much. But then I started the new job with big energy.

When I resumed, I would come in the morning, spend a few hours in the office and leave immediately, but I would always ensure I tell my BM I was going to see a customer.

This was something I always do and the BM started taking note of my activities.

I also made sure my manager was always aware of my activities and performance. I responded quickly to emails, submitted reports on time, and stayed visible. I made big impression.

I became the BMs go to person and that was how he started giving me transactions to treat.

Before long, I got my confirmation and promotion.

Many sales people are scared of the commitments they make during interviews.

My advice is this: get the job first.

Stop worrying too much about the targets you mentioned during the interview.

Start the new role with big energy, a positive mindset and a willingness to deliver.

You never can tell who will support you, who will open a door for you or which opportunity will change your numbers.
