My girlfriend invited me on her family’s beach vacation after we’d been dating for about a year.

Everyone kept telling me, “Just be yourself.”

So I did.

I helped unload the cars, carried everyone’s luggage upstairs, grilled burgers the first night, and even woke up early to make coffee for whoever wanted it.

By the third day, I thought everything was going great.

Her parents were friendly.

Her younger brother wanted me on his team for every beach volleyball game.

Even her grandma told me I was “good people.”

On the drive home, my girlfriend was unusually quiet…
