Britain's prison system has been under pressure for years because capacity has failed to keep pace with demand. We cannot ignore the reality that overcrowded prisons threaten public safety and the effective operation of our justice system.

My priority is to protect victims while ensuring dangerous offenders remain behind bars. That is why the most serious crimes, including rape, child sexual offences and grooming offences, must continue to face the toughest consequences.

We are also strengthening supervision for offenders released into the community through tougher licence conditions, electronic tagging and greater powers for probation officers. Victims deserve better support, stronger protections and confidence that the justice system is working for them.

At the same time, we are investing in the largest prison expansion in generations, creating thousands of new prison places and exploring further reforms to ensure the system remains sustainable. Our goal is a justice system that is fair, protects the public and restores confidence for the future.
