Actually, I’d guess most every golfer has been impacted by the increased distance due to the ball and driver length. It comes in terms of dollars for renovation, lost range balls, longer time on the course, proportional maintenance costs. Golf is a broad game with broad abilities, but we all feel the pinch of even just planting trees and growing rough if not adding length. Those cost money too and every club has a club champion, a player a little better than the next closest guy… he deserves to be challenged too, so it’s not just about the elites, it’s about every single player from the latest beginner to the guy who’s 90 and can still shoot his age to the club champion, the aspiring college player, the inspired high schooler, the only ones not paying for their greens fees and for their balls are the tour pros…

Current golf courses would be too long if we went back to hickories and featheries. The scale of the courses must match the scale of the equipment. The time to go back that far was 100 years ago. Go back to 2000 was when 3 things happened at the same time, graphite shafts became reliable, solid ball construction, metal heads on “woods” all in about 3 years time. Titleists 975d driver with a proforce shaft hitting a prov1 = 20 yards with the swipe if a credit card.

Had one of those at Kiawah about 15 years ago. Not older, young dude and he didn’t laser, pace or pin sheet anything. I challenged him about the same point, somewhere around #6 and he laid it all out for me …

“That yardage marker is 132 to the middle, the flag in that location can only be 8 back of middle and we are 7 paces from the sprinkler head… go ahead, here’s the pin sheet, step it off, it’s 147… I doube 6 times a week for the last 18 months bro”

On top of that, smoked enough weed to kill a small elephant.
