1. The sun crept over the jagged skyline —a fortified farmhouse on the city’s edge. I woke up a bit later than normal today, the past days have been a drag on me. I went out on patrol to check up on how the community was coming along in my absence.
1. One freed man, Sam, clung to me saying. “They took my sister, Mara! She's pregnant. They said her baby would be ‘perfect.’” His voice broke. “She’s still out there.” My chest tightened. Another Jenna, another child.
1. I brought Mara to an Alliance medic, Tara—a rare honest soul. She scanned Mara, grimacing. “Shard radiation’s deep. She’s stable, but the baby’s saturated. It’ll be strong—too strong. Might not survive birth.”
1. The hall settled, bodies hauled away. Vara faced me, voice low. “You’ve stirred a hornet’s nest. The Veil’s bigger than Voss—lieutenants, scientists, spread thin but dug in.” She’d purge them, she claimed, but I doubted her reach stopped at colonel.
1. I strode into the command hall, Jace at my flank, as Colonel Vara addressed her captains. Her steely gaze locked on me. “Thorn. You’re out of line.” I tossed the chip onto the table. “Play it.”
1. The cathedral loomed over this part of the city. It's clear they took over this area after I moved the few families out of this area to a more secure place. Me and Jace crept through Its undercroft, avoiding patrols. The air buzzed with Abyssal Energy, thick and oppressive.
1. The Reaper charged us, claws raking stone. I met it head-on, I wasn't even thinking, running on instinct. I used my sword to cleave its flank while Jace struck from behind. It fell, but the delay cost us time.
1. I tracked down a guy I knew Jace, a Thief I fought beside in Reaper raids. Jace lounged in a shadowed alley, flipping a dagger. “Heard you’re poking the Veil, Thorn. Bad idea.” I tossed him the shard fragment.
1. It took me some time and effort to get back to my base from the lab in the other city. I was avoiding monster mobs, but as I fought to get back home, I pieced it together. Those people wearing those insignias can't be actual Global Alliance.
1. After my vacation day, I went out early to check up on how our new community was coming along. We've moved 38 new families into abandoned houses, and I wanted to see how the new construction was coming along.
1. During the following week, we protectors in the city had been working together to move families to the selected locations. It's not been easy, but it's been obtainable without any injuries associated with moving or harm caused by the monsters.
1. It would take me 3 days of pouring over the map after my daily patrols, delivering meat, teaching how to preserve it, running through my training regimen, and taking care of odds and ends at my home base. When my plan was completed, I went out to deliver the news.
1. After everyone turned in their questionnaires, I sorted them out by the skills I listed on the questionnaire in the order I wrote the skills, adding 1,2,3,4, etc. I would write Multiple 1's or 2's, etc., for each person listed as having that specific skill in their family.
1. I started the meeting at the Library by asking the crowd to raise their hands if there was anything they were in need of. Nearly everyone raised their hands. So I asked the crowd to lower their hands.
1. We held the meeting at the library, and I was astonished at the number of people who showed up. There were people from all over the city, there wasn't enough room in the library for everyone to sit.
1. With winter coming, people are getting more desperate, it seems. Crimes that used to be a thing of the past are becoming a real issue to us all. Thefts have risen, revenge punishments for stealing basics like food are getting out of hand.
