DIGGER (2026) is losing 2,535 theaters in its third weekend, leaving it in just 786 venues. After opening to $8 million domestically and dropping 60% in its second weekend, Tom Cruise’s film is suffering one of the year’s most brutal theatrical collapses.
Ben Affleck says the "high-school bullying" of Tom Cruise's "Digger" will only lead to Hollywood studios making more "sh*tty" movies.
"Everybody wants to celebrate this bomb as if it’s the most exciting thing to happen. And you think like, it’s a pretty ambitious, interesting movie made by interesting people who have talent. Everybody wants to count the money, what it lost or whatever. To me, I just think, if you punish movies that take risks, guess what you're going to get? A bunch of sh*tty homogenized movies. You cannot do something interesting without taking a big swing. And that means you're going to sometimes look bad." (via Happy Sad Confused)

Ben Affleck turned down the chance to direct STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (2015)
“I don’t think I can do it as well as somebody else, and I don’t want to direct something that I don’t feel like I have a chance to be really, really proud of.”
EDGE OF TOMORROW (2014) had Tom Cruise dying over and over again in an alien war, & somehow turned it into an absolute blast. The marketing barely did it justice, but Doug Liman delivered one of the most rewatchable sci-fi action movies of the decade.

Ben Affleck calling out the Digger criticism as high school bullying is spot on.
Rooting for ambitious swings to fail only guarantees a future full of homogenized, safe filmmaking.
If audiences and critics punish artists for taking creative risks, the industry will stop making anything interesting out of a fear of looking bad.
Ben Affleck on DIGGER backlash:
“It’s like high school bullying. You see it now with DIGGER, a ambitious, interesting movie made by interesting people who have talent. If you punish movies that take risks, you’re gonna get a bunch of homogenized movies.”
