Thousands of juniors took the ACTs last week, and due to the decision making of our School Board, the tests were free for ALL students for the first time, ensuring that money was not a barrier in the pursuit of higher education.

Bethel was proud to be part of the WASA WSSDA WASBO Legislative Conference and Day on the Hill this week. Our own Brenda Rogers is serving as President of WSSDA this year and was on hand to discuss issues of significance for school districts across our state.

Distracted driving is putting our students in danger. Our 21,000 students going to school each day, often in areas without sidewalks and street lights, deserve everyone's full attention to safety.

Fire Science students from @PCSkillsCenter got the chance to train with @GrahamFireWa this week on the property that will soon be home to the new Bethel High School. On Feb. 27, firefighters will burn the old house to the ground to make way for the new school.

Four of our schools have been recertified as Energy Star Award winners. Congratulations to Camas Prairie, Naches Trail and Spanaway elementary schools, as well as Bethel High School. All 27 of our schools have received this national recognition.

We recently received an award for our work with the College Bound program. This scholarship program helps connect low-income students to state financial aid. Some of these students will be the first in their families to go to college.

We were honored to host Congressman Denny Heck this week at Thompson Preschool, Thompson Elementary and Spanaway Middle School. Rep. Heck's Valentines for Veterans program is a great service for our men and women in uniform. Thank you!

This month we had 600 more students than we did this same time last year. As our district continues to grow, I am thankful to our voters for passing our school construction bond. Next year we will open our first new school in over a decade.

It was great to see the ribbon cut on Phase I of Challenger High School. While students and staff benefit from the new building, we will begin working on Phase II. The Phase II ribbon cutting will be held in 2022.

The legislature is considering three bills focused on school-based health centers. I am glad Community Health Care is working to help our students, and I look forward to their permanent location in Bethel Middle School being completed this year.

The state does not pay for all positions that are related to student mental health. Our local "enrichment" levy continues to fund the difference. Mental Health is a critical piece of education.
