Wholly excessive sentencing of Russian veteran human rights campaigner, Oleg Orlov ...Like Navalny before him, he will now be consigned to a penal colony.
Prosecutors have asked a Moscow court to send veteran human rights campaigner Oleg Orlov to prison for 2 years 11 months for “repeatedly discrediting” the Russian armed forces. Verdict may come later today.
📢 New update of our Ukraine Support Tracker. The big news: Europe overtakes the US by a large margin (total EU now 2x US). If we add UK, NOR, CH, then US commitments are only 45% of Europe’s (€70 bn vs €156 bn). This is a major shift compared to first year of war. A thread 1/7
Last week I had translations of two Ukrainian writers published:
Maik Yohansen, killed by Russia 1937
Victoria Amelina, killed by Russia 2023
My last message from Victoria was about a reference in her poem to another poet I've translated, Vasyl Stus, killed by Russia 1985. 1/4
Great privilege to be a part of the core @FCDOGovUK team that made the Ukraine Recovery Conference happen #StandWithUkraine
The #URC2023 delivered:
$60 bn+ intl commitments
500/$5Tn+ companies ✍️Ukraine Business Compact
War Insurance Framework
Unity, diversity, delivery 🌍
A Russian victory would rip up the UN Charter and give the green light to a new era of international aggression.
So, the UK is proud to provide military support to Ukraine.
We do so in line with international law.
Ukraine deserves peace, not war.

Stop detaining & imprisoning journalists for doing their jobs.
Stop the threats & attacks.
Stop the lies & disinformation.
Stop targeting truth & truth-tellers.
As journalists stand up for truth, the world must stand with them.

Amid bombings, killings of innocent civilians and feverish talk of counteroffensive, Kyivites flock to the park for selfies among the beautiful magnolias and blossom trees that themselves are impervious to war.
