Hard not to feel deeply sad for Keir, whatever the mistakes, taking the Labour Party from its worst defeat in 2019, the moral bankruptcy of antisemitism to changing the Labour Party and winning a landslide majority was no small feat.
History will look back on him fondly.
Andy Burnham's win gives us a clear path to beating Reform at the next election. But we need the Andy Burnham that deindustrialised towns like Makerfield trust.
We do not need a Labour Party to placate luvvies like Hugh Grant and lose.
The working class we were founded to represent might choose to give us one final chance here. Andy must not use Makerfield as a springboard to govern for the metropolitan professionals who have benefitted the most since deindustrialisation.
@theobertram@SMFthinktank You run into problems when you start adding salary caps as it can reduce incentive to work as is being seen around the £100k mark at moment.
Thanks to the efforts of this Labour government, families are saving an average of £8,000 on their childcare hours.
But I know too many parents are still being stung by 'top up fees'. It's not acceptable.
I've asked the CMA to step in.

Wasn’t initially a fan of Burnham parachuting back into Westminster but this video has gone a long way to change my mind… easily the best communicator on the Left in the country right now.
I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government https://t.co/PNfl5GnB0X
UK GDP per head grew by 0.6% in q1 2026 to which is the fastest economic growth per capita in a quarter for 4 years…
UK GDP growth itself is fastest of the 6 G7 countries that have reported so far (and Japan expected at 0.4%, would be fastest full stop)
Quite the backdrop for a leadership challenge…
BREAKING from @ChrisMasonBBC
The BBC understands that the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has decided to begin an inquiry into whether the Reform leader Nigel Farage has breached the House of Commons Code of Conduct over accepting a £5m gift and not declaring it
Important this isn’t lost amongst the talk of Labour leadership challenges.
Reform and Greens, who both believe they can replace Labour as the party of the people have leaders who are tax dodgers.
Zack Polanski and Richard Tice loudly, and repeatedly, called for @AngelaRayner to resign for her tax affairs.
Yet when they’re caught doing identical things, they refuse to hold themselves to the very same standards.
If Rayner had to resign, why not these two?
Now wiped 🫠 but what an effort the Labour team put in in MK - some real shoe leather 👟
Thank you to all our incredible @UKLabour volunteers & best of luck to all candidates for tomorrow 🍀🌹
