Sources: The #Browns are trading standout edge Za'Darius Smith to the #Lions, who add a key presence on the edge to help make up for the loss of Aidan Hutchinson.
It’s Smith and a 2026 7th going to Detroit for a 2025 5th and a 2026 6th. A major move.
Far too many people are acting like Jadyn Davis is made of glass, although I do understand the hesitancy in playing a young and inexperienced QB at this level (and under these circumstances).
In an ideal situation, you let the true freshman sit and develop for a year while the veteran QBs keep the offense afloat. But after seven weeks of data, this is clearly not an ideal situation... and the offense is sinking. Staying the course and cycling through the same three QBs just doesn't seem like the best option - not now, and not for the future.
I'm not saying that Davis has to play every single offensive snap, but you've got four regular season games at your disposal where you can give him *some* opportunities without blowing his redshirt.
Playing Davis would also provide the best indication of what the QB situation might look like next year. Either way, I think we all agree that Michigan needs a portal QB. But what kind? That largely depends on Davis and his development.
If you're sure he's the guy, you're likely targeting a veteran who's comfortable playing a backup role. If you're not sure that Davis is the guy, you've got to do everything you can to land the top QB available - and those types of players (the Dillon Gabriel types) aren't interested in being backups.
Bottom line: None of the 3 QBs have proven they're capable of effectively leading this offense. The conference championship is off the table, the Playoff is off the table, and there's a solid chance that you won't even qualify for a bowl game if this level of play continues. Why not give the kid a shot?
