“The country has never been so divided and that is heartbreaking”

The Green Party’s Rachel Millward says it is our “collective responsibility” to heal political divides in the UK, but the “great divide” is the “economic difficulty” caused by wealth inequality

Apart from the leader of the Labour group whining about everything and anything the council does, I can’t point to a single Bristolian complaining about the committee system since it was brought in after we voted for it in the referendum

[Tom Hathway @Tom_jam]

For Labour centralised power is like a drug, and when you take it away from them and force them to work more constructively and across the parties all they can do is lash out in all directions to seize it back

It's time we did something about rip-off rents - and my amendment to the Renters' Rights Bill would do just that. My column for @MetroOpinion ⬇️ #RentControls #GenerationRent

Fantastic news!

[Carla Denyer @carla_denyer]

🏘️ Excited to announce I've got a seat on the #RentersRightsBill Committee! 🎉

I know, I know, being excited about joining a committee, get a life! 🥱 But here's why it IS actually exciting... 🤓

📝 It means that, rather than being restricted to just 4 mins to lay out my ideas for strengthening the Bill and standing up for renters (as happened 2 weeks ago👇) I am part of a group of MPs who will be going through it line by line over 6 weeks, proposing and considering amendments together

💚 This means that I've got a much better chance of actually influencing the Labour government's policies for the better.

✊ As someone who has campaigned on renters' rights for a decade, and as a newly elected MP representing a constituency where a whopping 47% of households are in the private rented sector, many paying rip-off rents for poor quality housing, I am absolutely stoked to have this opportunity, so soon after getting elected, to do this detailed work on behalf of for my constituents, on one of the biggest issues they raised with me during the election.

The committee will sit for a fairly hefty 6-12 hours per week for 6 weeks, not counting all the time needed for reading reports and working on my amendments, so some of my other parliamentary responsibilities will be on pause during this period. So if you are getting in touch with me to ask for a meeting in the next 2 months please bear with, I don't have much spare time. But I hope the wait will be worth it!

@char1iewatts Novel idea: businesses could pass the charge on to shareholders instead. Or if that’s too sociaist why not split the cost evenly, between staff that drive, the customer, AND the profit margin

[Carla Denyer @carla_denyer]

Really pleased to see a new, beefed-up Renters' Rights Bill proposed by this government.

The immediate ban on Section 21 'no fault' evictions is very welcome and will help protect over 10 million renters from risk of eviction.

Longer notice periods, banning bidding wars, Awaab's law to address dangerous hazards such as damp and mould, a landlord register, abolishing blanket bans on those with children or on benefits, and a default right for tenants to have pets - all urgent and really positive.

But on affordability I would have liked to see a lot more. This is an opportunity missed. We must not miss this opportunity.

There are some measures to stop rents being hiked very high mid-contract, but nothing to control overall affordability, e.g. by allowing councils to introduce rent controls in overheated housing markets as @TheGreenParty long campaigned for. And a lot of reliance on individual tenants challenging increases, which inevitably means the most vulnerable, lacking the spare time or capacity, will face the most unreasonable rent increases.

Greens are also keen to ensure energy efficiency is properly and thoroughly addressed by this bill. A decent, warm home is a right. It is welcome that the Government is going to introduce a Decent Homes Standard in the private rented sector but the devil will be in the detail, including how much funding is attached and how it is enforced.

This hugely important and urgent bill looks good as a starting point – but there is a serious gap on tackling sky-high rents and more clarity on making homes energy efficient and cheaper to heat would be hugely welcome. Where there are gaps, Green MPs really want to work with Ministers to close them.

We had five years of failed promises from the last Tory Govt during which time households were threatened with homelessness over 80,000 times – this time we need swift and ambitious action for renters who are being ripped off, living in cold homes or being made homeless.

.@BristolPride last weekend was a blast!

I’ve been going for over 10 years. I used to organise the @BristolGreen presence at it. So returning last Sat as a proud queer Bristolian AND the city’s first openly bisexual MP was a huge moment 🩷💜💙
