THE INFLUENCE OF AG:

My observation that certain influencers appear to be carrying water for the @USDA clearly struck a nerve. The defensiveness that followed, from both the agency and those who apparently felt seen, is a telling response to what was, at its core, a straightforward call for transparency.

I am all for farmers and ranchers having an inside line to government decision-makers. The issue is independence and transparency. If messaging presented as an influencer’s organic view of policy is actually the product of coordination with the government, that matters.

I consider many people with access to the Secretary of Agriculture to be friends, and many have been strong advocates for independent farmers and ranchers. They may still be both. This is not personal; it is about whether the public is being given the full picture.

But when Secretary Rollins posts a list of actions that purportedly protected farmers — one I know presents a poor reflection of the total effect of the Administration’s policies — it is disappointing to see once-fierce independent advocates simply amplify the message as “straight 🔥🔥🔥.”
