It is a disservice to the Group of 5 to have auto bids. Putting in teams via a special carve out places undeserving teams in the field that get blown out and create animosity toward their inclusion at all.

There’s no era where someone would’ve complained about JMU missing the CFP when they lost their only P4 game an Tulane missing when they lost twice.

There’s whole argument of G5 inclusion was always about those teams who went undefeated or clearly deserved a shot.
